Recipe of Mrs. Stewart Cranston
1954 California recipe box
The lady wrote in the margin, "this is a very good recipe - took 2nd place at a County Fair"
Devil's Food Cake
1 3/4 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon double acting baking powder
1/2 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup milk
2 large, unbeaten eggs
2 squares chocolate - melted
1 teaspoon red food coloring
Sift together cake flour, baking powder, soda, salt and sugar. Add shortening and 2/3 of the one cup milk. Beat two minutes at medium speed. Add remaining 1/3 cup milk, eggs, melted chocolate, red food coloring. Beat two minutes longer. Bake in three greased and floured 8" cake pans at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool on racks, then ice. Makes 3 layers.
Are these what you're referring to re: Victorian Military?>>>here's pics:

Perhaps you can print out an image that you like the best to place on the cake itself...call bakeries to see who does this (someone said Walmart does..but I'm not certain).
Did you see the movie "Julie / Julia"? If so, remember the chocolate cake recipe of Julia Childs that Julie makes for her husband? The one made with the sliced almonds on the outside? Here's a picture and that recipe....
