What kind of simple food should I serve for a small get together for kids bday? **Long but PLEASE READ**?!

Question: What kind of simple food should I serve for a small get together for kids bday? **Long but PLEASE READ**?
My sons will be turning 6 & 7 on 9/8 & 9/10...they are having a big party at a local sports arena the weekend AFTER their bday. BUT... on Friday 9/10 I am inviting my parents, my older sisters and their kids (my neice age 10 & nephews age 7 & 6) over for a "simple" party. Just want to have them open at least ONE gift without having to wait so long until their party, but I still feel the need to serve everyone food and cake. My question is since I really don't want to spend so much money on excess food (the real party is costing about $400) do you think it would be okay to make baby shower type food? Example: finger sandwiches with chicken salad, turkey & cheese, chips, dips, punch, cupcakes (their party cake is already costing me $100)? Anything else good I can MAKE without spending more than say $50? These are great deserving kids, and I know I can make them wait but, I really want to let them open a gift with the people who they are closest to.

Sounds like a pizza party situation, unless that is what the sports arena party will be. No need to stress or make it so fancy if it's your close family coming over. You could always barbecue. Hot dogs and hamburgers, and veggie burgers.

Finger sandwiches, etc. would be more than okay.

Just do what my family always does- BBQ!! pigs in blankets, hotdogs, hamburgers, steak, ribs, pasta salad, potato salad, finger sammiches, chips, dips, and have a good time!!

And remember: it's not a party unless you have punch!! Lotsandlotsa punch!

I'm hungry now.:P

MY FAV THING TO DO FOR FINGER FOOD FOR KIDS IS LIL SMOKIE SAUSAGES ROLLED UP IN BISCUIT'S & BAKE.

I think the finger food idea would be fine. You could also do burgers and dogs, if you have a grill that'd be best but if not you can do it inside of course. Most kids love hotdogs and they are cheap. Maybe just do enough burgers for the adults plus one or two extra but enough dogs for adults to have one too if they want. Most of time I see adults will eat one of each if available. Put some chips in a bowl with some ranch dip and call it done.

But if you wanna stick to the finger foods you could add cocktail weinies in the crock pot, cut up some inexpensive fruit and place on platter with toothpicks. You could do your turkey and cheese in cubes on a toothpick with a pickle too, kids and adults love that. There are also some neat ideas out there for toppings on crackers too that look festive. I don't have a site but you could google it or go to ritz or club cracker website.

I wish I could give you an honest answer to this question but I cant. I always go well over budget for daughter. She is a summer baby 07/14 so I had to give her two bday parties. One was at the school with all her friends and the other birthday party I planned was a month past her birthday in August. My suggestions to you when planning a kids birthday party, to keep everything cost effective is to sit down and write out a budget for what all you wanting to do. For example, I knew that I wanted a bounce houce, hot dog machine, sno cone machine. I knew how much I wanted and was willing to spend. I got all that delivered on Sunday for under $400. I also was able to rent a venue for a reasonable fee in our neighborhood community amenity center for less than $100.00 and I had it reserved for about 6 hours. You can't beat that. So you might want to check in and see whether not your neighoborhood or local community has a reasonable priced venue for you host the party. This saves time on not having to worry about your house being trashed while the party is underway. I went to a lot different places and bought party supply things and stuffed the bags myself. My friend made cake my daughters cake for me. When it comes to food, keep it as simple as you can. You will thank me later. Hot dogs, chips, fruit, and some sugar free juices are great. You don't the kids to be to over loaded on sugar. Most of all remember to relax and make it about the kids and it will all come together.
