Are the suites in most if not all hotels expected to be spacious and clean..?!

Clean - absolutely
Spacious - depends on how much you pay among other things and the style of the hotel
I rented a suite for my kids 18th birthday party. The fireplace (electric) didn't work, it smelled like cigarettes although it was a no smoking room and the carpet didn't look real clean or maybe the carpet was older and stained.
Don't expect them to be clean and spacious. After this I have since asked to see the room before hand to see if it will suite my needs. Most hotels have no problem doing this.
