Surprise birthday cake: What brand of stuff should I get, etc.?!

Question: Surprise birthday cake: What brand of stuff should I get, etc.?
It is my dad's 39th birthday this week and I want to make it special since I forgot his birthday last year. He loves it when I bake him stuff and I want to go all out on his birthday cake. I plan to make a two layer round cake with grey vanilla frosting in between the layers. I will ice it completely black with vanilla frosting colored black or cover it in black fondant and pipe a nice border in white vanilla frosting on the top and bottom. I will finally pipe little dots decorating the empty space around the side of the cake and pipe the birthday message on the top. I will also make a little dog out of rice krispies and put it on the top since my dad loves dogs. Here is some extra info: My dad's favorite color are black, white and grey, he loves cake and baked goods, and he loves dogs. He won't be home when I make it so I have enough time to make it. My question is where in Moreno Valley can I get cheaply priced but good quality fondant (black and white), edible paint (white, black, grey), and is there anything I should change or do to make the surprise cake better. Sorry this is so long, but I am not a pro at decorating cakes yet so I need opinions. Thanks! =)

okay, so fondant your just lost on because I find all fondant nasty. and honestly I'm pretty positive that you will have to add the color to the fondant. Go and find..(wilton makes some) gel icing food coloring not the stuff off the walmart food color gel shelf..it has to be icing food color.. and you take the fondant and add the color to it until you get the desired color..it will definitely stain your hands so you may want to use gloves and because your adding so much color you will need to keep the surface powdered with powdered sugar..not too much.. most fondant comes white..you can get it in colors though and in chocolate. uhm..oh and also I suggest you make your own frosting instead of any store bought..easy royal icing recipes online!! foodnetwork.com best thing ever.. you can take the gel food coloring and miz a bit of it with water and take paint brushes and just paint it on there. I would suggest covering the dog with fondant too.. work with it like modeling clay.. cover the body and make the creases connect underneath the body. uhm.. I know they have black and grey but white I am not sure about. you can always check but since icing is normally white Idk that they make that food gel color. anything else you need to know just ask.. oh and I think that your idea is a great one. just remember that you have to have an icing that can hold up the cake and not ooze out the sides. best suggestion get a large piping back even if you dont have a tip and circle the top of the first layer and then zig zag across it then take your spatula and even it all out, finally topping it with the other cake layer. don't foret you must dirty ice the cake (even if it has crumbs) for the fondant to stick. and the fondant should be between a half inch to an inch in thickness. over work it and it will start spreading and break as you put it on the cake.. need a rolling pin powdered and its easiest to roll the fondant around the pin then unroll it over the cake. Good luck! I'm here if you need any other help! oh and since you aren't going crazy with colors those should gels should be relatively cheap..go for the big think of black because even though it goes a long way you can make grey with it. and as long as you have milk and maybe a few other things.. the icing shouldn't bee too much.. the biggest thing will be the fondant.. there's really a lot of home items you could use if you get stuck. just ask. I'll try to help. Yahoo IM=Sugaredartist@yahoo.com
