Question: My son is turning 1 on Oct. 29th. , two days before halloween, what do you think of a bday/costume party?
This question is for all the experienced parents who have thrown successful and fun 1st birthday parties for their babies. I am throwing a big party to celebrate my only child who is turning 1 in october. My house does not have a lot of parking for the big family that we have. Family and a few friends will be a party of 80. eeeks. So I just booked the 2nd floor of Sonoma Chicken Coop which will hold 100 people comfortably and we will be having buffet style dining. Since there will be about 18 children at the party. Do you think it would be a cool idea to have a costume party/bday party? Have all the kids/babies come dressed up? Any ideas on a few budget friendly activities for the children ? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks :)

yaa..I love halloween. My birthday is on the 27th. I think it would be awesome. The adults can dress up too. I have 3 daughters, & I threw them all a big 1st birthday party. My daughters 1st one was Hawaiin/Luau theme, 2nd daughter was Pooh corner, and 3rd daughter was DOra the Explorer. I had a few games for the older kids. Im definitely on a budget, so I bought some stuff that related to the theme, and bought table covers and other decorations from the dollar store. I think you have plenty of time to start buying things little by little.. I hope your party turns out great. Good Luck

Honestly, coming from a mother of 3 children, wait until your child is older to do such an event. Do you have any idea how stressful this will be just for a 1st birthday party? Kids get cranky, cry and throw tantrums. I always suggest 1st birthdays should be very small and simple. Wait until your baby is older. He or she wont know what's going on and you won't even enjoy it..

I would definitely make it a costume party!
You could maybe have a designated adult to pass out candy bags.
You could pick best costume and have a prize for that.
You could do bobbing for apples.
You could do cupcakes with pumpkins on them.
You could have an activity table where the kids can make halloween arts and crafts such as little ghosts, pumpkins, black cats, etc.

I think it's great to have a big 1st bday party. They only have one 1st, right? I think having them come dressed up would be cute, everyone is going to have their costumes anyway and if the parents (and kids) are like me, they would love another chance for the child to get to wear it. Your decorations will be super easy by tying it in with the holiday.

For my daughter's first party our gift to her was a ball pit so we set it up for the party and all the kids liked it alot. We had a big crowd but mostly adults so you might need a bigger one than we had. But if you like that idea you could buy a big inflatable kiddie pool (on clearance right now) and some balls and make it yourself, maybe even two of them. And then your son could have it to play with at home. If your guests will be mostly younger kids then I think something along these lines would be good--you know young kids are fine with free play and it may go over better than alot of planned activities.

But if you want some things planned, you could do something like painting little miniature pumpkins, I think those are fairly cheap, each child could paint one and take it home. Or if you don't want to get that messy, you could have washable markers and let them draw on them.

A table with coloring sheets (printed off internet) and buckets of crayons is a great way to give the kids something to do while everyone is arriving.

If you have an artsy friend or family member you could have them do face painting. A pinata is always a hit, you can get the pull string kind for young kids. Obviously you would want to fill it with toddler-safe candies or treats.

Good luck!
