My recommendation would be if you are having your party at a hall, inform your boyfriend that you are taking him out for dinner at his favorite restaurant but have to make an "appearance stop" at this hall for a friend, relative, other person having a shower, wedding reception, party, etc... Use the excuse occasion to get your bf to dress the way you intend for him to look at his party. i.e. your excuse wedding reception / formal dress, party / casual dress, etc... Good Luck

you could say you're taking him for a meal or maybe that you're friend wants to borrow something of yours and she wants to meet you there to get it
or just tell him you're taking him somewhere but you can't tell him where

Tell him that you both were invited to a surprise party for a mutual friend. He'll think it's a party for someone else until he gets there.
