other important tip from me : always smile!
I hate the waitress without smile, I love the shop or cafe with friendly waitress, ;-) remember!
forget your problems outside, and give the sweet smiles to customers.
good luck!
my advice
I hate having to say, "Hi, I'm--------I'll be your server today. Think it sounds phony and too rehearsed, so I try to work it in at some other point. I also know that part of the job is upselling, but when I go out, I'm often offended by it. Depends on how it's done. Sometimes it's just plain pushy. Actually your question is the answer. Wait on people the way you like to be waited on.
be yourself but not in your guests face, stay calm and collected, know your menu very well. I hate servers that are never around or around too much. Pre-bus your tables.
always smile
Be attentive.
Warn us if an item we ask or sucks.
Check back as soon as possible after delivering food.
Don't make us wait for our check after providing otherwise good service.
aint nobody gonna tip you i bet
Ha
What sort of restaurant is it?
You have to learn how to read your guests... I would suggest always approaching the table with a smile NO MATTER what is going on with your day approach with a smile and a cheerful greeting "Good Morning or Hello how are you doing this afternoon?" this sets the tone and allows you to gage their reaction if they are having a bad day you will/should tell by the response to your greeting...
next introduce yourself "My name is_____ I will be taking care of you today. Is this your first time here? Have you taken a look at our menu (pause)
*if they haven't then let them know you will give them a second to take a look but ask if you can get them something to drink in the meantime*
Ask if they have any questions... Suggest what is popular (you should ask whoever has been there a while what are some of the popular items on the menu)
When suggesting what is popular say this last part with a smile - so that they know you are trying to be helpful and NOT PUSHY or treating them as if they are stupid. Being a server is a balance of not offending and being capable of reading your guest well.
Keep them updated on the process if you are busy I would suggest sharing that with them but letting them also know if they need anything and you are with another guest please just let the busser know and you'll be right over.
2 bites into their meal return to the table to be sure everything is to their liking. Good Luck!
