It's interesting to note that it just isn't an American thing: In Australia and Great Britain, it's called a "barbie," etc. There's a fascinating a history that goes along barbeques, and this recipe site has a section that clues us in on it--should you be interested in it, as I think it gives reasons why people have bbq's:

Just whatever is available online and what I have on my mind, including the inclusion of relevant sites, like the one cited that came about from my efforts, which is intended to be useful. Helping people get the relevant info they want is great.
Because BBQing gives meat and sometimes veggies a different taste that you can't get from an oven or stove top. Plus less clean up, you get to be outdoors, it's more family oriented, you can BBQ and spend time in the backyard with your family and friends. Your house doesn't get all smokey and hot from the stove.
And it's just downright AMERICAN!!!
well me and my family bbq alot and we bbq to get the family together catch up on our live's...we bbq,drink,dance and chat my little sisters make the dessert my dad the meat,my step mom the sides and the rest the alcohol and music.....we do it to eat, get with family and have a good time...
People have barbecues because there is nothing nicer than a piece of chicken that is burnt black on the outside and still raw inside .. and the smoke is a really good way to piss off your neighbours !!
Because it provides a tasty alternative for regularly cooked food and also usually a social gathering (picnic or backyard get-together) in which to enjoy the food among family and friends.
Usually to eat, socialize, enjoy the good weather, or I guess have a drink in some cases. Barbeque's are awesome!! ;)
