Edible?

You need a variety of pans. Try a thrift store. Or shape them with aluminum foil. Or use the same size pan & trim each cake, You know, largest on bottom, smaller on up. Use icing, like the guy said, different colors, to smooth out the slope.

Then for different color, use different cakes. Yellow, chocolate, vanilla, etc.

Good idea. Good luck!

Oh. Have a hole down the middle & use some cherry filling for lava. (Figure a way to get it to flow out....

You can crumble cookies or brownies as your layers. for a layer of limestone you could use vanilla brownies colored with green food coloring... do that before you bake them. You could crush plain chocolate cookies without filling. For shale... which is generally brownish grey, you might want to use a flat bread. They are thin and tasteless normally if you get the right kid... just break them up and lay them in a couple layers. How many layers do you want? You dont want a monstrosity to have to carry to school. With your basic cake.... make one layer and then split it using thread. Pleace thread on the side of the c ake furthest from you and with a sawing action slowly pull the threa dhtat is placed halfway up cake towards you... watch that you stay in the middle as you pull.
then put the cut side down....
You can also use brown jelly belly jelly beans....
Coconut colored with Green for the grass....
Mini Marshmallows coated in melted chocolate chips for rocks or boulders....
Red vines of licorise (the thin ones) for outside of the mountain to emulate hot lava...
For the Grey rocky layer granite I think... I would use vanilla almond bark or white chocolate that has been melted and add blue and a little black and a little white to make a grey color.

Hope this helps... It sounds like a big project

bake the cakes in pans a lil larger than you want it to be, so yu can cut and shape them. make em really cool && don't worry if it dosn't turn out perfect! valcanos aren't perfect!
on the outside use different shades icing grey & brown && maybe you could use marshmellows somehow.. ahah or crushed oreos, pretzels, nuts, chocolate
ohh man im jealous! i wanna make a volcano cake now! (:
GOOD LUCK!!!! :D

Tint the icing in different shades?

Add nuts to it to create texture (rocks?)
