I served chips and a entree of lasagana then cake and ice cream for dessert.
Um i don't know how old the birthday person is, but I would have finger foods(veges and dip, chips and dip, fruit, crackers, etc) out for guests when they first get there, then maybe do hotdogs and hamburgers with chips or fries or maybe a simple casserole dish for the the entree. Then have the cake for desert. I don't think its good just to give cake and drinks, because most people come to parties hungry. So make sure to have other food besides the cake.
You know what is easy and very inexpensive....?
Chili - get some of those big commercial cans of chili con carne and they will run you about $7-8 a can and then get some chopped up onions, cheese, etc. and just put the chili in the crockpot and get some corn chips and let everyone make what they like - nachos, chili in a bowl, etc.
Good luck - chili goes good with alcoholic drinks BTW...
Yes, I would definitely serve an entree. When most people go to parties, they expect that there will be snacks and main food, as well as drinks and cakes. I think it would be a good idea to have something. You could always do something inexpensive, like spaghetti. Hope I helped!
I think you can do it.
I agree with the other answer about pop/chips/etc. I think you could get away with not but it's not a bad idea in the event somebody is hungry and a bag of chips can be had for $2 or so.
