i would recommend getting white linen or cotton napkins sized about 40 x 40cm. If you have a sewing machine you can make them yourself on the cheap, just get squares of fabric and hem them!
I would recommend white, one because the colour is appropriate for ALL occasions and two because you can bleach food stains out of them!

socially appropriate will depend on the company you keep. in some circles it is much more socially appropriate to have cloth napkins while in others it's just fine to have paper napkins bought from the dollar store.

If you are looking for cloth napkins, just go to a store like Bed bath and beyound. You can get really nice napkins for pretty cheap.
