What kind of seating is typical for a cookout?
We're having a cookout next Saturday and on the invitations I asked people to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets because I did not think I would be able to find some.
Now I've found a place where I can borrow tables and chairs for the cookout. Do you think people will be mad if they lugged their stuff here only to find its not needed? Also do tables and chairs add too much formality to a cookout? What would make my guests most comfortable?

We're expecting ~20 people. Its very laid back and we're having a keg. I would rent the tables and allow your guest to bring chairs. Set the tables around and allow your guest to sit where they like. Tables and chairs do not add formality unless you use white tablecloths. . . people prefer to pull up to a table with a group rather than eat off a plate on their lap. i think thats a great idea.....folding chair would also be great, too. A cookout should be very casual. Maybe if you got a couple of tables with chairs for some of the older folks to sit, and then let the children sit on blankets and whatnot. Also, if it's at your home, you can also let people sit inside it they wish. I know at my house, most of the men will want to be ensconced in the TV room so that they can watch sports and stuff while they eat. Maybe some TV trays would be a good idea also. Just borrow the tables...and a few chairs in case someone forgets.
Tables are good--who wants to balance a plate on their LAP while trying to eat?? Don't go to the extra expense of renting chairs, let everyone bring their own & use the money you save to get an extra keg!! Keep it casual so everyone can cut loose & have a relaxed time. Hell, down in Georgia we've even dragged the old couch out into the driveway, hooked up a black & white TV to catch the NASCAR race on & had a great time grilling beer can chicken......... Don't see any problem - some will probably forget their chairs. As long as they have a place to sit comfortably and a place to put plate and drink it should be fine. Cook outs are casual and people expect that. Just relax and everyone should have a great time. As a guest I wouldn't mind bringing my own chair. I have the collapsable ones that are usually more comfortable than the hard folding chairs which is probably what you are borrowing. I have an outside table and chair set and a lot of lawn chairs myself. Some will sit at the tables and some will form small groupings of their own chairs. Don't worry, they'll have a blast either way. Well it depends if you are a red neck, then you could use your truck beds like we do. You can also use blankets on the ground. Just have fun and be safe. Happy 4th of July Definitely have some tables and chairs. No matter what you said, some people will show up without them! It's a lot easier to eat if you can put your plate on something.
