How do you make a less sweet icing (containing flour, perhaps)?!

Question:

How do you make a less sweet icing (containing flour, perhaps)?

When I was in high school i used to bake cakes and had this great recipe for icing. I think the recipe was in a church cookbook my mom had. It was a lot less sweet than the icing you get at a bakery, but was not the "whipped cream" icing. I remember it had flour in it and that made it less sweet. Any suggestions for a recipe?

Answers: This is an interesting question, I'd love to try this too! I googled your request and here are a few I found: (Hopefully one of these is close to what you're looking for)

FLOUR ICING

5 T. flour
1 cup milk
2 sticks butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

In saucepan, mix flour and milk over medium heat until thickened. Let cool. Meanwhile cream (room temperature) butter, sugar, and vanilla. Add cooled flour mixture to creamed butter and blend until light and fluffy.

FLOUR FROSTING

1/2 c. milk
2 1/2 tbsp. flour
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Cook milk and flour until thick, cool and refrigerate. Cream well shortening, sugar, salt and vanilla. Add this creamed mixture to cooked mixture. This frosting remains soft and creamy. Be sure cooked mixture is COLD before adding.

It's takes the sweet out and spreads much more easily. An easy recipe for less sweet frosting is to make it with cream cheese. The saltiness of the cream cheese mixes well with powdered sugar and gives it a nice, fluffy texture. Here's a simple recipe...

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

In a small bowl beat whipping cream until stiff peaks form; set aside.
In a large bowl combine cream cheese, sugar, salt and vanilla. Beat until smooth, then fold in whipped cream.
