Answers: Ok, I am from Alabama, let me tell you how to make REAL chicken and dumplin's. Boil a WHOLE seperated chicken in a large stock pot with salt, pepper, parsley, & tyme until done. When done take chicken off the bone and discard bones and fat. mix 2 cups flour, a dash of salt and baking power and water until a consistancy like pie dough. Flour the counter and roll out dough to about 1/4" and cut into large pieces. Bring the chicken stock to a boil and drop the dumplings in the boiling stock and boil for 6 - 10 minutes stirring the whole time, they WILL STICK if not. When they are tender put the chicken in and you have the best southern staple known to man! Source(s):
My grandma and my mom....via Southern Living three chicken breast boil them untill done save the juice and pick the chicken off place in quart pan add some more chicken broth and take can biscuits and season to taste http://southernfood.about.com/od/chicken... Become a vegetarian! save the animals If you're making the chicken and soup part in your crock pot, just take a box of biscuit mix and make according to biscuit directions. Drop dollops of dough into hot soup and allow to cook for additional 2 hours. CHICKEN & DUMPLINGS
2 cans of can butter biscuits
1 can Cream of Chicken soup
3 bouillon cubes
1 tsp garlic salt (optional)
3 to 4 boneless chicken breast
Boil chicken breast until done (20 minutes). While chicken is boiling, prepare dumplings.
Roll out can of biscuits on a work surface sprinkled with flour. Make them as flat at you can and check that they have a light coating of flour. Set them aside.
When chicken is done, remove from pan and set aside to cool, saving the water in the pot that the chicken was cooked in. Skim any foam off the surface; you want to make sure you have a good bit of water in the pot, about 3/4 full. If water has boiled off, then just add more. Bring to a boil and add 1 can of Cream of Chicken, 2tbs butter, 3 boullion cubes, 1 tsp of garlic salt. Stir well
Over medium high heat, begin adding dumplings. Tear them into quarter size pieces and drop into the boiling water.
Hint: The less you stir the better they are, so after you add all of them, reduce the heat to medium setting, stirring only occasionally. Add chicken back into pot, tearing into small pieces. Cook until the dumplings are soft; this usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. I promise these are the best dumplings you will ever eat!. Enjoy!

Have been know to add extra taste with this recipe:

MUSHROOM, ONION AND PEPPER SAUTE
2 lg. green peppers, Chopped
2 lg. onions, chopped
2 c. fresh mushrooms, chopped
2 tbsp. oil
Salt and pepper
Heat oil in large skillet and saute until vegetables are tender, salt and pepper. Tasty side dish for steaks or hamburgers or drain oil and place in chicken and Dumplings.... extra taste. I know you said simple but it should also taste good, so please know that a whole chicken or chicken breasts boiled won't impart a lot of taste to the broth. Please consider fortifying the broth with garlic powder and some Minors chicken reduction along with carrots, onions and celery--rough chopped. The chicken will have better flavor and so will the dumplings. Cracked pepper in the broth really helps as well. Drop the dumplings into this mixture after removing chicken from the bones and returning to the pot. You can also remove the veggies from the broth, process them and return them to it for even more flavor.

Drop Dumplings:
2 C All-purpose flour
1/2 t Baking soda
1/2 t Salt
3 T Shortening ( I use butter for a richer taste)
3/4 C Buttermilk
1 T. finely chopped parsley leaves

Mix all ingredients except buttermilk and parsley together with two knives or a pastry cutter until it is a crumbly consistancy. Add parsley and enough buttermilk to make the mix come together--it should be a bit wet. Using two spoons, drop the dough into the broth which should be at a rolling boil. Put a top on and lower temp to medium--cook for approximately 8-10 minutes. I add herbs to my dumplings for a change.

I like fines herbs mixes, tarragon, (both dried) or fresh chives. It's a quick & easy way to make the dumplings taste different.
