Any ideas on being creative with my veggie tray?
Hello! I am creating a veggie tray for my 3 year old cousins birthday party. We aren't doing anything expensive and it's going to be adults and kids, so I don't want to do anything to funky because of the adults, but would like to do something a little fun because of the kids.
I am probably getting celery, red and yellow bell peppers, green bell pepper, brocolli, cauliflower, carrots, cucumber and accented with black olives.
I have a sectioned veggie tray and will of course do a dip in the center.
Any suggestions on how to cut or place the above or a special dip that can make it fun?
Thanks!!!
Answers: I would customarily use a loaf of bread, hollow out the center and fill it with the dip recipe. Use the bread as an additive to the veggies.
If you are looking to spice things up, add some flavored hummus and/or seasoned olives to the tray. This is not an everyday thing, so I am sure it will be appreciated by your guests. Jicama is fantastic. It has a little bit of a different texture however I love the snap like that of a celery stick but more fibrous. You could go retro...
Get a pineapple or cut a fairly large cabbage in half and use that for your base. Cut the veggies small enough that you can put them on toothpicks, and then make little mini kabobs on the toothpicks and stick them into the base.
You can even hollow out the top of the base, and put a small bowl of ranch or whatever flavor dip you enjoy. You can get some mini cookie cutters, usually 1 or 2 indivudially are not that expensive. You can then use them to cut out the cucumber slices into what ever shape you like. Serve both the cut outs and the circles with the shapes out of the middle so you don't waste any.
You could also get the baby carrots and place black olives on the end just to change it up. Don't do this to all the olives or carrots though in case someone doesn't like one or the other. yes you just dress up and sing Hollow out the center of a red cabbage and pour your dip in that I was recently at a wedding with a veggie tray that had a hollowed out red pepper in the middle full of the spinach dip, or whatever else dip you chose. I thought it was neat. Also, crinkle cut things for a little texture. People also like to eat small portions...like not just a hunk of carrot, try doing matchsticks, easy to pick up and people don't feel awkward crunching really loud and trying to eat them.
