Dry ice for fog...will it crack a glass punch bowl?!

Question:

Dry ice for fog...will it crack a glass punch bowl?

I've seen lots of suggestions for using dry ice in a container with a punch bowl sitting on top of it. Has anyone actually DONE this? and is there a possibility the temperature differential would crack the bowls?

Answers: The dry ice will make fog when it is mixed with other liquids and it does make things very cold (which is why you should never touch dry ice with your hands) but punch bowls are usually made of tempered glass so that punch can be kept cold in them. You can fill your bowl with water and food coloring then drop small pieces of dry ice into it (using tongs) and your fog will continue as long as you have dry ice pieces. I have done this and it is very successful as long as you keep an eye on it. Watch the water level as well as the dry ice so you replace both as needed. Good Luck! Go with a plastic punch bowl, just to be on the safe side. Also, I know that my grocery store (Vons) sells dry ice and has brochures on how to handle it, so maybe before you buy it, get some info.
