Once I threw a party...
I had a swimming theme kind of but I did Hawaiian and I made the pool kind of look like a beach. It was pretty cool!

What age group is this party for? Since you said barbie and pirates I'm going to assume this is for a child.

Hawaiian, Disney characters(Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Alladin, the princesses, Shrek, The Little Mermaid....etc :) ), Jungle, Zoo, My Little Pony, Cars, Beach Party, Sports, Hippies, Safari, Alien, Disco, Napoleon Dynamite, Superheros, Spongebob, Star Wars, Scooby Doo, Dinosaurs,

Google party themes and you can most likely find a good selection of creative ideas!

a lot would depend on what age group you're thinking of (and gender if it's a child's party). (ie: children or adults)

try beach, or do a music themed party like 60's rock or 80's revival, Western themed, fairy themed or people of the Fae (elves, leprechauns,dwarfs, brownies, sprites etc) The world of Harry Potter or any variant of the theme. Addams Family or something similar, Trains.

If it is a child's party what does the child like? Take one of the likes and turn it into the theme. One of my godsons a few years back was big into Bob the Builder and would love to death anyone who gave him something with that theme.

Just remember that if you want a costume type party, some themes are harder to do. Or you can do this: (if it's a type of birthday party or other gift giving party) In the invite, let everyone know the theme and ask them to just bring something within that theme as a present.

you could have a laxative and red pepper powder party. yeah you get everybody loaded on that stuff and vodka and marijuana, it would be a total blast. have you heard of hash, laxative, red pepper, and raw garlic brownies? they are totally yummy. you could go clubbing after you eat a ton of that stuff. make sure you never use the toilet after. it will make the fun a ton more. you will smell very good after that.
