Either a stuffed, roasted chicken or turkey with all the trimmings (stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc.) or pot roast or some other kind of hearty stew that can simmer while you're away. In my experience, though, kids don't really like all the vegetables in stew and might be picky about it. Go for the chicken or turkey!

One more idea- lasagna. It's hearty, it's delicious, and it's cheap to make. Best part- you can actually make the lasagna the night before and put it in the fridge, then just pop it in the oven for an hour or so. Everyone loves lasagna!
Get a crock pot, make pot roast. let it cook all night, when you get home it's done.
Try getting up and making like some pork loin roast in a BIG crock pot.Google crock pot meals and see what you can find. A crock pot roast would be good .Its better to cook on slow though for 4-6 hours for the best taste though. Good Luck
crock pot ideas are the best for cooking things while you are there or are making and doing other things... maybe a roast in the oven either pork or beef..... cook it the night before and then put it in oven that morning before church..... beef stews.. corn bread.. anything really... a home made pie? oo can i come? good luck!
Two hours is a long time, except for a large turkey.

How about going to the supermarket before or after church and picking up one or two roasted chickens in the deli sections. They are delicious.

PRIME RIB ROAST

Prime rib roast (allow 1/2 to 1 lb. per serving)
Seasoned salt
Garlic salt
Pepper

Rub prime rib with garlic salt, seasoned salt and pepper. Place roast, fat side up in shallow pan (a rack is not needed as the bones will act as a rack). Insert meat thermometer in center of meat roast in slow oven at 300 degrees. Allow 20 minutes per pound for rare, add about 30 minutes longer for medium and 3/4 of an hour for well done. Be sure to watch your thermometer as roasts differ in size.
Remove from oven and let roast stand a few minutes before carving. Skim fat from drippings and make au jus by adding a little water to drippings.
Chuck Roast (Beef)

Place in Reynolds baking bag (don't forget to cut small holes in top) and seal w/ tie ..you can find them in grocery store w/ the aluminum foil or ziploc bags. Yes they're oven safe and keep things moist and tender!!
Add 2 cans cream of mushroom soup & 1 can of water and
1 pkg dry Onion Soup to bag before sealing.

Bake at 350-400 for about 2-3 hrs.(Depending on size of roast) or can be cooked in a slow cooker the night before. Either way, but I prefer the bags.

Serve w/ green beans and mashed potatoes (which can be cooked ahead of time to save time) and Sister Shubert yeast rolls! (If you have them where you are...they're just like home made rolls)

Your green beans or potatoes could cook in a slow cooker while you're at church also.

or if you like Pork you can put a pork roast in a slow cooker with water and various seasoning and let it cook all night and part of the next day on low. add 1 pkg of McCormicks pulled pork seasoning (prepared as directed) and serve w/ baked beans and cole slaw or potato salad. EASY!
chicken dumpling peas
Pulled pork in a slow cooker would cook for about two hours and it takes minimal ingredients like brown sugar, black pepper and cider vinegar. Get yourself some BBQ sauce, burger buns, and family size can of baked beans and/or some coleslaw and it's a Sunday Family style BBQ picnic to remember.
Yeah, I grew up with this one: Roast Beef in a large roasting pan, add one envelope onion soup mix. Add: cleaned pricked potatoes, or peeled potatoes, carrots, and onion if you wish and add about 4 cups water. Cover and cook at 300 F for 2 - 2 1/2 hours. When meat and veggies are tender, take them out of the pan. Pour the liquid in a stove top pan and bring to boil. To thicken, put cold water in a bowl, about 1/2cup and add 3 Tablespoons flour. Whisk until smooth. Whisk the boiling liquid as you add the water and flour. Let thicken and remove from heat. Serve. You can make heat and serve type dinner rolls or crescent rolls or have some kind of bread if you like. Most any drink goes with this meal. The great thing about it, is the salt is in the soup mix, so you don't need to add anything else. Simple but tasty! When you walk in the door, the aroma will hit you and invoke your hunger!
Roasted Chicken (or chickens if they're on the small side)... that you season and put in the oven before you leave the house. Makes the house smell great!

Mashed Potatoes... that you've prepared the night before, they just get heated when you get home from Church.

Steamed veggies... that you've put into your steamer pot with the water also before you leave, but don't start the flame until you get back and you're setting the table, changing your clothes or whatever. Veggies steam fairly quickly.

Then you can either make gravy from the drippings or use the cheater gravy available in the stores. Add drippings for extra flavor.

Then serve dinner rolls and butter with the meal. Whatever you choose, a family meal sounds wonderful. Enjoy!
put on a pot of butter beans(lima beans) in the crock pot or put some steaks in the refridgerator in some italian dressing to merinade and pick ur some cold potato salad and a couple cans of baked beans at the market and have a good old southern bbq.
everyone else says a roast how about a big pot of spaghetti sauce in the crock pot, the longer it Cook's the better it is.
This is generally a Sunday meal that I grew up with. It will take more than 2 hours to cook, but very little prep work. The night before season up some ribs with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, cumin, and brown sugar. Coat the ribs on both sides the night before. I like baby backs, so I cook them for about 3 hours wrapped tightly in tin foil on 300 for about 3 hours. So an hour before you leave for church put them in the oven.

The night before or the AM of cook 1 box elbow noodles about 3 minutes less than they need. Then mix this with 1 large bag of cheddar cheese, 1/4 stick of butter, salt and pepper. Pour this in a baking dish (you can actually do this the night before) and stud with cubes of velveeta. I generally use 1 of the smallest brick they have. Then pour on 1 1/2 cans of evaporated milk. Cover with foil paper and put in the oven right before you are about to run out the door with the ribs.

The same with canned baked beans. Generally for a picnic I will use 3 large cans with 1/4 cups each finely diced onion, ketchup and brown sugar. In addition I use about 1 tbsp. each of mustard, salt and pepper. I top this with already cooked bacon and let this bake in the same oven.

In a crock pot add either fresh green beans or cabbage, it doesn't matter. Add either a ham hock or a smoked turkey let with salt and pepper. It will be perfect after 2 hours.

The night before make bisquick biscuts and dice up some strawberries that you macerate with a little sugar (I generally use Splenda with the same results). Serve with with ice cream and/or whipped cream.

Also bread and butter. Everyone loves this despite the meal. Pillsbury makes some pre baked rolls that are great in the oven for about 10 minutes. If you want to make it even nicer make a honey butter or garlic butter. Anything that will give a dish of butter a little extra flavor. Another really nice thing to do is make corn bread. Again, this can be made the night before. Get corn meal and follow the recipe on the back, but instead of using flour or any other dry raising agent substitute this with yellow cake mix, and add in one small can of corn. I like to use frozen, but you have to wait for it to defrost, and then you don't use the whole box. A can is neater, and you don't have leftover corn.

Another idea is a nice beef stew.

1 pack of stewed beef that you have cut into quarters. Mix this with about 5 tbsp. of flour, salt and pepper. Let this brown up in a sautee pan. Add this to your crock pot with baby carrots, pearl onions, mini potatoes and a few stalks of celery that you have diced up. Then add 1 c. each of beef stock and dry red wine. Cook the the day or night before. It needs to cook for about 4 hours on low. After this taste for seasoning. You will have time to reseason when you reheat the stew. The day you are about to serve it reheat on low. Serve with crunchy french bread and a simple salad.
stew....or a pot roast....

If you are looking for an alternative to a roast, here is a recipe that my family loves. You can set up a "garnish bar" with chopped red onions, chopped cilantro, diced avocados, lime wedges and sour cream, my kids love that part.
