I found a website with recommendations for food, music, and other ideas just for pool parties: http://www.evite.com/app/cms/ideas/pool-...

Cut up lots of fruit and put it in a big plastic bowl. Some people want fruit and veggies instead of chips.

Guys love subs. Order maybe 10 large subs and cut them into quarters.

Buy some cheap kids' pool toys, like the game where you throw plastic things in the water and dive for them. People have fun with kids' toys even when they're older.

I like the other themes mentioned. You could also do tropical fish as the theme, and use deep blue and fuschia as colors. Or for the Hawaiian theme, use the hibiscus flower for decorations and as the color of your tableware. For the jungle theme, you could get plastic safari hats and bandanas for your guests to wear - give them cheap plastic binoculars to spy on each other and flirt :)

If it's at night, I'd do a South Pacific theme: have the girls wear sarongs and the guys wear light-colored pants and a tropical shirt. Have lots of hurricane candles out. Give out those neon glow necklaces, or buy cocktail cups or plastic ice cubes online that glow. Serve Asian food.

During the day, I like bright colors, energetic music, and spicy food! How about Mexican?

Top 40 music is probably fine. If you are older and want something more sophisticated, you could try reggae, steel bands from the Caribbean, Andy Narell, soca, tropical jazz, Beach Boys, traditional Cuban music (like Buena Vista Social Club), Afropop, or relaxing acoustic guitar. Mix it up so people don't get tired of hearing the same thing. You can ask your friends to bring a CD that goes with your theme.
Maybe you could do like a jungle theme and decorate accordingly with palm trees and such and the guests can where animal print swimwear. You should serve cookout food and also have trays with other snake like stuff. And of course you should have music, music is waht really makes a party.
For Food I would have like chips and cookies and brownies and stuff like that and I would definitely have music!!

Hope it's a cool party!
yes to the music, definately. and for food, chips, cookies, maybe a little fruit tray for those who don't like a lot of sugary stuff. cupcakes, cake, stuff like that that most people like. you don't really need a theme for just a regular party, so just put a bunch of decorations like streameers hanging and balloons of course, and i would get a beach ball or sumthing for the pool incase people don't feel like swimming and just wanna play a game or sumthing. have an awesome party! good luck!
if you don't want to spend a load of money then jus get chips, dip, pretzels, cookies, candy, other snacks and cake and ice cream! definately have music.. ipod playlist. surround sound.. yeaa and for a theme jus make it like wild.. a night you don't ever want to forget..
Have a Hawaiin Luau party.
Serve drinks with slices of pineapple.
Or make a punch with pineapple juice.
You can have luau contests, music, provide leis, dancing, macadamia nuts, etc.
Use outdoor inexpensive paper lighting.
