Menu for 50 people - 40th birthday party. Easy & Inexpensive?!

Question: I suck at this kind of stuff and suck at cooking - thats my opener. I'm having a 40th bday party for my husband. Planning on about 50 people.
So I want to keep things simple & not break the bank.
Thinking - Appitizers - Ordering extra large taco dip tray, cheese/sausage tray and pinwheel tray. Making deviled eggs.
Meal: ?????????????? order ham & beef & serve hot for sandwiches?????????????
Drinks: 1/2 barrel beer, soda & wine

Do i need more - other suggestions? What about for the meal??

TIA!!

It sounds like you have a plan, but if you want to go inexpensive, I would suggest instead of buying meat and cheese trays, etc., that you purchase the ingredients and cut them up and arrange them yourself. Your cost is about 1/4 to 1/2 of what an already made tray costs. A large veggie platter will cost close to $30 in most places, and you can do a wonderful fresh tray for about $15, and have more stuff. The taco dip tray is the same; buy the ingredients and do it yourself. They aren't too time consuming to do, and it shows that you took the time to do it yourself.
I have put on alot of parties, both big and small, and I have found that people really appreciate home made food. So, stick to things you can do, and make them yourself and people will be happy and your husband will really be appreciative.(AND YOU WILL SAVE LOTS OF MONEY)
PS- with all the money you save on the trays, you can buy a great cake and present!

I think you are off to a great start with your ideas! How about ordering sandwich trays from your grocery store deli. That would take care of the actual meal part. If you have the other items you mentioned, then you really won't need a big meal- just serve lots of appetizer type foods! How about a huge tray of veggies with dips too? Don't forget bottles of water and sodas too for those who don't drink alcohol! Good luck! I am sure it will be great!

Not sure where you are at, however most stores offer a turkey or ham dinner. Pre made just heat it up in the oven. It is fairly inexpensive, you can slice for sandwiches or they can just eat it.

I like the previous ideas. I definitely think you should have something hot, and a salad of some kind. Not just potato or creamy mac. Maybe a nice tri-color rotini in Italian dressing with tons of veggies? Or an orzo spinach salad with lemon vinaigrette? And garlic bread or bruschetta.

You're right on though. With that many people, it'll probably be mingling and grabbing the occasional snack, not wanting a full dinner.
