There are lots of sites on the web that can give suggestions. try:

It's usually an open house, similar to a cocktail party-but with less alcohol. Frequently on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. You have a stated beginning and ending time, say 2-5pm. You usually have finger foods or appetizer-type foods like finger sandwiches, miniature quiche, vegetable and fruit trays, cookies or petit fours. Things that people can munch on while they walk around and you show off the house. Punch, wine and beer are good choices for beverages. People will bring gifts. Have a table or desk or counter area where they can place them. You open them later. People will come and stay a bit and leave when more people come, usually. There are different customs in different areas. If possible, you could ask some of your husbands's relatives as to what is customary in the area where you live, and who should be invited.

Ok, the best time to do it would be up to you. Maybe a Sunday afternoon or you could do it on a Friday or Saturday night. You need appetizers like wine and cheese or a vegetable platter and some wine. Then you can make dinner if you want. If you dont, you can serve all appetizers and then a nice cheesecake and coffee. You dont have to do anything for gifts for them. Just make sure the house is real clean put out flowers. Just make it nice and they will be happy. There are no real rules.

Basically, you invite people over to see your new house! You have some food otu for them to eat and nibble on, but you are basically giving tours and showing off the house and yard.

So get those pictures hung...company's coming! :-)
