Southern food?!

Question: Why do we have a distinct Southern cuisine, why is there no "Northern Cuisine," or is there?

Answers: Why do we have a distinct Southern cuisine, why is there no "Northern Cuisine," or is there?

There is --- there are distinctly Northern type dishes, which although have the same English/French cuisine base as Southern food, are different because of the addition of cultures such Russian/Polish and Italian. Typical food : Philly cheese steak, clam chowder,Waldorf salad, Chicken à la King, egg cream, pierogies, typical Italian food like spaghetti and meatballs. There is also a Western cuisine, also called Californian cuisine - influenced by Asian food and fresh seafood, and fruits and vegetables.

i am sure yall had it but no one liked it. Just kidding, how about the philly cheesesteak or the Chicago or New York style pizza, California has its own hippy organic food thing going on. Also how about southwest style cooking.

Yankee pot roast? Most "southern cuisine" is actually northern food that may be a little more spicy or Mexican dishes adapted in America to our tastes. I think the northern part of the country because of its diversity when origionally settled Is Irish, Italian, chinese or French food and so on, it does not carry the description of Northern cuisine. Of course most of the original immigants to the U.S. were english but honestly, what are the most famous english meals? Have you ever been to a big city and looked for and found an "English Restaurant?"

pulled pork sandwiches
You also have Chicago style hot dogs, pizzas,Polish Perogies

Here is an Alfedo Sauce that is popular in Chicago
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup butter
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 cups milk
6 ounces grated Parmesan cheese
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Melt butter in a medium, non-stick saucepan over medium heat. Add cream cheese and garlic powder, stirring with wire whisk until smooth. Add milk, a little at a time, whisking to smooth out lumps. Stir in Parmesan and pepper. Remove from heat when sauce reaches desired consistency. Sauce will thicken rapidly, thin with milk if cooked too long. Toss with hot pasta to serve.

And midwest has casseroles!

What people think of as southern food is really soul food. It is things that stick to your ribs to keep you full all day while working. Also it is cause many here in the south long ago learned to make things go further and would eat (had to eat what ever they could find)

I think the difference in the food has to do with the availability of the products, like different veggies etc; grow in the south as opposed to the north. Where as we love grits, i understand you cannot even purchase grits in the north, for grits the northerners serve cream of wheat. Boiled p-nuts, we love them also down here, in the north people wonder why you would boil a p-nut. and just to survive some of the earlier settlers had to make things like "hoe cakes", corn meal mixed with water and whatever else was avilable, baked on the end of a hoe over an open fire.
