Indian Hindus Paneer - Queso Blanco question please?!

Question: In Western supermarkets, I can't find paneer
Is Queso Blanco close enough?

Also I thought most Indians make their own yogurt but I see ladies buying store yogurt.

Also for you who come from overseas, in India, your dairy is raw right? How you feel about the pasturized crap here?

Thank you

Namaste!

Hello there,
Paneer is cottage cheese. It is generally made out of cow or bufallo milk.
Some supermarkets sell cubes or blocks of cottage cheese.
Wholefoods sells blocks sometimes. That's how I make paneer masala.
If you have an Indian store in your area pick up Amul branded Paneer.
The food here .. the less said the better

Paneer is a soft cheese made from buffalo's milk . The texture is similar to fresh mozarella. You'd be better off using Halumi cheese or Greek Goat's Cheese.

If you plan to use paneer in a recipe and don't want to make your own, you're actually better to substitute firm tofu cut into cubes and lightly fried. You don't want something that will melt or crumble in your recipe.

If you really want paneer use something like Greek yogurt, heat it up with a dash of lemon juice and then separate the curds. Press these together in a pan, and you will get something almost like paneer.
