Per http://www.foodreference.com/html/artbas... Basmati rice - "The Hindi word ‘basmati’ means fragrant, and refers to the nutlike flavor and aroma of this small, but long grained rice. It has been used in India and Pakistan for thousands of years and is excellent with curries. Several varieties are now grown in the U.S., such as Texmati and Kasmati, and all are growing in popularity. (One U.S. company has made an effort to patent Basmati rice and trademark the name). Their flavor is very good, but not quite up to real imported Basmati."

As for Sona Masoori - from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sona_masuri "Sona masuri (or its original name Swarna Masuri) is a medium-grain rice grown largely in the Indian states of Andra Pradesh and Karnataka. It is lightweight and aromatic, and considered to be of premium quality.

By large it is considered to be a healthy diet as it contains less starch and is easily digestible. "

From http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?s=d5... "Basmati rice is not starchy and has a nutty flavor while sona masoori is a bit starchy and needs to be rinsed a few times until the water runs clear to remove starch before cooking."

Basmati - Long grained ,Rich diva's Food,on the High End
ofcourse Briyani is no good without this !

Sona Masoori- Middle Class Food,The plumpy version of rice.

Basmati rice is mainly used by north indians. It has more flavor but is very refined (low fiber content). Sona masoori rice is used in south india and has actually a better fiber content...
