It's easy!

Basically boil the milk on either the stovetop or even in the microwave. Let it cool, if you add the culture now --- you'll kill it! When it cools to room temp but is still sligthly warm, add a tbsp or so of your culture (basically yogurt). Then cover it and put it in a warm place in your kitchen. If you live in the cold, you may need to put it in a low oven @200 deg F. The next morning, it should be ready.

FACTORS:

If you use whole milk, you will get the best yogurt obviously due to the higher fat content. But 2% milk is good, just dont use fat free milk.

If you live in tropical climates, your yogurt will be made quickly. Cooler climates may require using a low temp oven.

Use a good quality yogurt as your culture, any will work. I like Kefir.

This is the basic method, depending on the climate and your personal preferences (milk type, culture/yogurt quality....) you can tweak this method.

If you use organic milk and culture, you can make organic yogurt.

Once the yogurt has been "made" it will last for a few days in your refrigerator. Save a tbsp or so as yogurt culture for your next batch.

My mother actually brought (more like smuggled) yogurt culture from India and has been using it for years. It can be frozen also, thawed and used.

I'm not 100% sure on how you make it but i do know that you need a culture which in my grocery store we sell. I work at the Atlantic superstore we sell this in our natural valu department( if your loblaws has the health food section with in it you should be able to find it!)

Basically you need milk, Dannon Plain yogurt (any plain yogurt with live, active culture.

A pot to boil the milk and containers for incubation and storage.

Desi Chef is absolutely correct. That's pretty much the way my mom made yogurt and taught me how to make it. It's not a complicated process at all.
Kefir is a good yogurt culture or even balkan style yogurt (Astro) works well too (pretty much the same as each other).

But if your yogurt turns out nice and thick, just reserve some of that for your culture for the next batch you make instead of buying it. Works well too.

You'll never want to buy yogurt again ! :-)

p.s: You can make your own yogurt cheese too with the yogurt you make. Place a good amount of yogurt in a clean cheesecloth and let it sit in a colander (over a big bowl to keep the whey liquid...so healthy, delicious and refreshing to drink) overnight. You'll get the creamiest yogurt cheese ever. Add a little salt (only if desired). But it's pretty much tangy on its own. Drizzle with olive oil and enjoy!
