Maggots in Re-fried Beans?!
Answers: Is there anything in refried beans that can resemble maggots? Tonight I ordered food to go from a Mexican Rest. that I go to frequently. I had a little tub of refried beans. I put some on a tortilla, then put it down on my plate. I noticed in the tub of beans something that looked a lot like a maggot. I grabbed it and looked closer, but wasn't sure. Then I see that the whole tub is filled with the same little maggot-like things. They were all the same shape and color. Examining it, I swear I could see little ridges in them, and they all had little darker ends. Luckily I didn't eat any. My husband thinks they are maggots. I am hoping that there is by chance, something in refried beans that could be confused for maggots. I'd hate to accuse this place of having maggots in their food, unless it's true. Any thoughts?
Looking at the picture and the description - dark on one end, I think they are maggots or some type of larva. I don't think it's plant matter - the sprout or the germ. It's definitely animal.
I'd talk to the health department and give the restaurant a call. It sounds like the place has bad food handling practices and food storage issues. It takes awhile for maggots to develop.
don't eat there no more
Gross! What is this restaurant? Could it have been rice? Should have saved some and taken it to a lab. Call the Health Dept. and report it.
that is nasty. i think you are right. maybe you should take it in and say what the #$$% is this!
Maggots will develop in refried beans. I would take it back to the restaurant so they can take care of the problem. They may not know. It is a health code violation and you should also contact the health dept.
Disgusting.
There is something in beans that can look like a maggot. After soaking a bean, split it in two and you'll see a small little stem-like thing. It's what would start growing. Kinda like a plant embryo. It is usually very pale in color - not the same color as the bean.
It's likely that this is what you saw.
If the beans split while cooking the little sprout or seed type thing will come out....you can take a bean and split it open and you will find this. Perhaps the beans were cooked too long or at too high of a temp. which can make the bean split like that. With all the beans split like that...yeah it can look rather unappetizing.
i vote maggots
