Have Any Of You Actually Ate Puffer Fish?!

Question: I've always been interested in eating it. I'm in NYC and I did a search online and there are only a handful of Japanese restaurants that serve it, maybe 15 places.

Have any of you actually ate it before? Is it safe when prepared properly? I've heard people feel a numbness of the tongue which gives this fish the exquisite taste; caused from minute doses of the poison not enough to cause harm.

puffer fish isnt so bad, its actually very common to eat, even in places like hawaii... it just recieves a bad rep, to my knowledge as a euro-asian chef for 13 yrs eating a reef fish is more dangerous than eating a puffer fish,... reef fish contains mercury/cigautera poisoning.. where as fugu(puffer fish) is prepared by so called professional in not puncturing its sac, where it contains little but toxing element that could make u ill, but all in all, i love fugu, best way to eat it, shasimi style, try oki-oki in tokyo or beniha's in the states

yes i died

no... i am scared to... lol

i ate it before and i was fine........i was like 4 and know im 10.. i mean 11! i forgot! anyway,....im japanese! :D

Nope - and I have it on good authority it hasn't been served in years - Many sushi restaurants that offer Fugu (puffer fish) are really selling Talapia or a type of bass. Fugu is toxic even if prepared correctly and since the flavor is so close to bass or Talapia why risk it? Just ask of Talapia or Sea bass sashami and you will have the same taste without the inflated prices. Good Luck!

I went fishing with my buddy "Puffer" and I ate his fish, so I ate Puffer's fish. I didn't like it though. Too many bones. I'ld rather eat at McDonalds.

i love sashimi,,but I don't think i will try puffer fish or sea urchin.. would like to try abalone but have not found any place to get it...I love white and pink tuna,,salmon, eel,,octupus, I also really like having pickled ginger with my sashimi..
