There is that type of food, but harder to find. Always a small independently owned establishment and considered "ethnic" food. It's very hard for small businesses to compete with the many huge chains of fast food restaurants in the US.

I wish there was something equal to what's in Germany!! (I lived there for a year). Some Greek and Baltic restaurants here have variations of it, but it's not as good as over there and the sauces taste slightly different.

Of course the originial "doner kebab": is Turkish. I lived in IIzmir for seven years. I have no idea where you might find the same thing in the US,

I know a couple of Turkish restaurants in Chicago (they're called "Cousin's"), but am not sure whether they serve doner kebab there. I could sure gobble one up right now (I miss Germany).

Forgive my ignorance here, but is this similar to Shwarma (sp?). I have seen a few places that sell Shwarma and it is prepared in a way that looks like the picture.

Some Greek and Turkish places have it, but it's not nearly as good as the one you get at stands in Germany. I lived in Germany , and I've been looking for good Doener since I came back.
