It is a spice, but it's not spicy-hot. It's more spicy-flavorful. It tastes like pumpkin pie without the pumpkin, if you can imagine. A nice warm taste.

It complements black pepper well, and makes it spicier. Using the fresh grated, I think can get a burn in large amounts.

Yes & flavourful - just a pinch though because it's strong. Best to use a whole nut and grate it as you need it. Keeps fresher that way. My daughter in law finds it offensive doesn't like the smell and refuses to eat anything with nutmeg in it.

yes and it's good with milky dishes

I am a former chef and all of the repondants are right, when I worked in Jamaica we had a tree on the property, we also had a allspice (pimento) tree, mango, ackee and a sorrel bush.

Like a few ahve said it is a heady psice, and has 2 parts, the outer cover is known a mace, and the seed or nut the nutmeg, dried it is grated into baked good, on sweet drink like Guinness punch and Egg nog, they use a bit in Jerk seasoning.

Even East Indian cuisine uses it, and alot of European countrys use it many dishes. I have a grater, and grate it for each dish, it keeps longer, I even use a bit in my mashed potatos.
