Im a southern gal and it was good ole Liptons Tea Bags...."house wine of the South"—a clear, orange-to-red tinted tea brewed from six or seven Lipton or Luzianne tea bags, poured hot onto a cup or more of sugar or a pool of simple syrup, and then diluted into a gallon pitcher in the fridge. It's served over a mound of ice in a huge glass—so cold that you can watch your napkin drown in a puddle of condensation.

Thats southern sweet tea

I thought it was just regular iced tea with a ton of sugar added.

Lipton & Lots o' sugar

If it doesn't taste right, you need more sugar!!!!

Go to foodnetwork.com and type in Paula Deen. She is the greatest!

Lipton or Tetley is the favored in my area (South Georgia).

I tell you. Some people say it's just about the sugar, but it ain't. I've tried and tried to make good sweet tea and never could do it. The aftertaste would be too bitter or it'd be so light it wouldn't have that rich, earthy flavor. And my friends who COULD make it couldn't tell me what they did different. So I just went out and bought a tea maker. Hamilton Beach...not Mr. Tea (they dribble and spill too much). Slap two family sized tea bags in there, fill the tank, and let her rip. 3/4 a cup of sugar (I usually use a full cup but it doesn't hold as much as regular drink containers) and a quick stir later it's in the fridge. Takes all of 5 minutes and my friends have all complimented me on my tea.
