I am pregnant and love chinese food. Am I still able to eat shrimp in chinese food that is fully cooked?!

Question: The whole point of staying away from seafood during pregancy is that toxic metals like mercury can be present in seafood (undetected) and may cause health problems for your child.

Mercury bioaccumulates in the bodies of animals, including shrimp. This means that, no matter how much you cook it, the substance will remain in the animal until it dies and decomposes. If eaten, mercury can move into the fetus' body, where even a small amount can be dangerous.

The shrimp just isn't worth it.

Yes, you can still eat shrimp in Chinese food as long as it is fully cooked - the same goes for any other meat or food.

I don't see a problem here. The key is moderation in all foods, focus on the super healthy ones while limiting the junk, and check with your health practitioner if something 'feels' wrong.

I love Chinese food. You can eat anything you like when you are pregnant as long as you are not allergic to it. When I was pregnant I couldn't get enough shrimp in lobster sauce, Cold shrimp with seafood sauce.

You ask about shrimp fully cooked? Well now they cook in just a few minutes - 3 or 4 and you really don't want them overcooked as they will be tough. You will, of course, by now consulted your paediatrician and gynaecologist...they will provide with guidelines of does and dont's.

I remember my last pregnancy very well and so does my husband: I woke up craving crispy bacon and there I was with about 3 weeks to go at 3:00 am with a whole pound of frozen bacon in the pan, defrosting and the outside layers starting to cook - a happy camper here - the aroma woke up my husband and he came to the kitchen and just stared at me - but I was very happy and asked him what he wanted for breakfast (he was not bright eyed or bushy tailed and went back to bed). Well, I cooked the bacon and made a toasted bacon sandwich with a cup of tea and you see it was so great I still remember it 40 years later.

Guess there's nothing wrong to eat shrimps while you're pregnant...

I believe the reason doctors tell you to limit the amount of seafood is because of high levels of mercury, which can be very dangerous to the brain of a developing fetus. Mercury levels can't be effected by cooking, unfortunately (although other bacteria and contaminents can be).

But, tuna and other fish of that sort which are warned against, are higher up on the food chain than shrimp and thats why they have more potentially concentrated levels of mercury (from pollution). Shrimp might have a bit, but theoretically not so much that a few are going to harm anything.

Heres a good website with some information on what the risks are with certain foods when pregnant:

China's the only place where I have seen shrimps being eaten alive at a restaurant (they were squirming and flipping in white wine inside a large bowl).

For everyone else including pregnant women, shrimps must be FULLY cooked before consumption.
