Need a substitute for the Asian Petai (stink) bean. Any ideas?!

Question: Help!! For all of you SE Asian especially Indonesian, Malay, or Singaporean's, our family lives in a rural area of the US and we need an easily obtainable substitute for the green petai (stink) bean. We were just at the nearest Chinese store and they looked at us as if we were mad. Unfortunately, the next nearest store is Chicago and as it's winter... need I say more?
Specifically, I am trying to prepare Sambal Goreng Ati (Gizzards in Chili & Coconut Gravy).
For all of us Americans, McDonald's had/has a salad with almond shaped green 'nuts'. Those are the Petai beans.

I'll take any realistic, and as I said easily obtainable in a mid-western US rural area, ingredient & give it a shot.

Terima kasih (thank you)!!

There is an on line-store that carries Petai, Indonesian Foodmart, I think they're in California:

As for substitutes, maybe pistachios, at least they're green...LOL, taste and stink won't compare though.

First of all, i seroiusly doubt McDonald's has ever served petai beans. They are the acquired taste of acquired tastes.

The last time I had petai beans was 7 years ago, and from what I recall about them, the only substitute i can imagine for their texture and appearance would be edamame/ green soybeans, which is availabe frozen at any Asian market or even some conventional markets like Trader Joe's and Costco.... Another possibility would be fava beans. .

As for the STINK, i would say it is impossible to find elsewhere. You could try another kind of "stink" that is popular in indo/malay/singaporea cooking, which would be shrimp paste (belacan), or maybe dried shrimp.

This article :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkia_spec...

mentions that both Asparagus and petai beans makes your pee stink. So maybe they would both have similar effects on food as well?

The article also mentions they may be available canned or pickled in jars, or frozen in bags. Checked those sections of the market?

Petai beans also have a bunch of other aliases, which you could run by the Chinese market again. I think they are called "cho doe" (stinky bean) in mandarin.

You should also try a vietnamese or Thai market, which would carry more SE Asian ingredients.

Good luck with everything! Sambal Goren Ati sounds delicious, though i always thought Sambal meant shrimp...
