Mild Indian dish with rice? I've never had Indian food?!

Question: My husbands company party is going to be held at an Indian restaurant because the owners are Indian themselves. Neither my husband nor myself have had Indian cuisine and do not know what to order? We wouldn't want anything really spicey...just mild and maybe containing rice or chicken? Can anyone experienced with this type of food suggest a dish?

I can't handle very spicy things well, either so I was a little worried when I first tried Indian food. But here is what I LOVE:
Tandoori chicken, or chicken tikka...both have are very flavorful without being extremely spicy. Then peas pilao or some kind of pilao (rice) dish...they are all very good. There is one with nuts, coconut and fruit, which might sound strange, but it is REALLY good! Also get yourself plenty of naan (bread...almost like pita)...it is yummy!
Have fun...if you are in doubt...just ask the waiter or waitress for their recommendations...they will try to help you...they want you to come back, after all!!

chicken korma

Go with the Chicken Tika Masala (not sure of spelling)
It's chicken with rice it's mild but has a great flavor. You won't be sorry.

Indian food is all very flavorful and aromatic (and delicious) don't be afraid of spices as they are usually blended with other ingredients that make them very palateable, however if you want something mild get Palak Panner and white rice (it's made of cheese)

Most likely the owners will have a buffet of items set up, so you will have a variety to choose from. I am sure nothing will be too spicy since the party is catered towards non-Indians.

Try a little of everything, what a nice experience --- hope you enjoy it!

If it's an order/person type of affair go with a chicken korma or makhani (butter chicken) with a saffron pulao.

I love the Shrimp Vindaloo, just make sure to tell them that you would like a mild spice when you order.

The safest route when you first eat at an Indian restaurant is tandoori chicken. Vegetable Korma, just make sure you order it mild. Also vegetable samosas are always good as an appetizer (I'm not a vegetarian, I just like those dishes the most at Indian restaurants).

My favorite Indian dish is called Bangan Bhurta, it's a roasted eggplant dish with peas. Normally I hate eggplant, but I love that dish.

As someone else said, odds are it will be a buffet.

Popular dishes are Tandoori chicken, which is basically BBQ chicken - not spicy at all. "meat" Vindaloo (where meat can be chicken, lamb, beef, shrimp, fish), Chicken Masala, which is an Indian dish created for western tastes - much like chop suey is a chineese dish created for western tastes. Neither dish exists in the native cusine.

The breads in Indian cuisine are really good. Be sure to try those.

For beginners I always recommend tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, paneer saag (spinach with cheese), or vegetable biriyani.

If they have a buffet I think you'd get more enjoyment out of trying many dishes. Just avoid anything with Madras or Vindaloo in the name, as they are VERY spicy.
