What is Soul food like? Please share it?!


Question: I am very interesting to know what is SOUL FOODS -well, I already know it's culture food by African Americans--

Please share some famous and well know Soul foods and easy receipes please.

Soul food always meant Southern Home Cooking to me. I was raised on it. I do love much of it, however, it often meant overcooked, lots of grease and flavorings such as salt pork and ham drippings. And of course fried, fried, fried. There's fried chicken, fried cat fish, chicken fried steak and hush puppies. Fried okra and corn fritters. I never had a steamed vegatable until I grew up and left home.

Ah, collard greens and kale are on the top of my list too!

And while we're on the subject of Soul food. Start saving your bacon drippings and ham fat. If you don't have a big old cast iron skiller, get one. You are gonna need it!

The good news is the cuisine is getting healtheir.
Well, maybe not the pecan pie.

Southern Fried Chicken:
Here's how I do it.
Cut up a chicken and soak the pieces in a bowl of milk, or butter milk for at least 2 hours. (in the fridge)
Remove the chicken and drain it on paper towels just until it quits dripping. Save the milk in the fridge.. Don't drink it.
Dip the chicken in flour (seasoned with salt and pepper). Then dip it in beaten egg. Then in flour again.
Fry in a heavy skillet until golden brown and when poked with a fork does not have pink running juices.
When the chicken is done set it aside.
Remove most of the chicken drippings. Make your gravy in the same heavy skillet using the milk you've saved. Do cook the gravy for at least 10 minutes.

Serve with mashed potatoes, collard greens, biscuits (no cheating with canned biscuits) and a peach pie for dessert.
If you count calories, you can't eat anything for the next three days.

The phrase "Soul Food" is extended from the African-American culture in which the soul (heart) is the center of a feast. Traditionally, it was a time in which families gathered to enjoy one another's company while eating various foods. These foods may include;

Mac n Cheese
Mixed Greens (turnip, mustard, collard)
Ham
Chicken (typically fried or baked)
Yam or Sweet Potatoes
Mashed Potatoes
Cornbread

The menu and tastes vary per family and region. You will find the BEST soul food in AR, TN or TX.

Beware of Soul Food made in MD, PA, NJ, NY or on the West Coast or upper East Coast.

Grits! Done right,they belong on the plate with the greens. Most of the grits packages have the instructions. The trick is to not let them be runny. Like runny eggs aren't fully cooked.
Like rice, you can dress them up however you like them. Savory, sweet, ... the choice is yours.

Soul Food is Food that Makes the Souls of the People Go Into relax Mode and allow them to Enjoy the Family More :)

I agree Soul food to me means good old fashioned southern cooking.

Soul food to me was always good ole fashioned Southern cookin'...usually with a heavy African American influence. Lots of restaurants around here serve it as part of their everyday fare. Some examples are:

Veggies such as cabbage, field peas, or green beans seasoned with a hunk of salt or smoked pork.

Homeade mac and cheese

Greens: collars, mustards, turnips, or mixed

Fried chicken, ribs, pork chops, or catfish and any vegetable served up fried as well...such as okra, sweet potato, corn, etc...

Cream corn so thick you can set your fork in it while you're eatin' your chicken

Offal cooked in delicious ways: chitlins, ears, tongue, pigs feet, chicken feet, tripe, jowls...everything but the oink. Even boil the darn head and eyes down for headcheese aka souse.

Lots of hot sauce especially on your greens

All washed down with gallons of ice cold sweet tea.
