Why do people prononce Conch Salad like how it's spelled??!

Question: It sounds like Conck Salad Noe Conch. But I dont Blame Them.

Answers: It sounds like Conck Salad Noe Conch. But I dont Blame Them.

In the English language, "ch" at the end of a word usually is pronounced 'ch' not 'ck'. For example, crunch, bunch, munch, much. So, we are used to pronouncing it this way.

But of course, if they knew the origin of the food and how certain words are pronounced, they would not be mispronouncing it.

You are right. We tend to pronounce things the way they are spelled. I didn't know it was pronounced conk until someone else corrected me.

Because they haven't been to Bermuda, the Bahamas or the Caribbean & been corrected! Like anything, we learn by example.

If they have never heard the correct pronounciation that is quite normal. I heard a discussion about this on the Jack Paar show many many years ago and I learned at that time is should be pronounced Konk and not 'Konsh'.

When it comes to people's surnames, I always ask first how to pronounce it.
