If you can find a Kabuki near you, you could try that. It's a chain but the sushi is pretty good and it's reasonably priced. The ready made rolls you get in supermarkets tend not to be all that good.

Take a friend along who eats sushi. That way you can order stuff to share between the two of you and if you don't like it then they can have it. You're usually safe with california rolls, tuna rolls, things like that. My favourite is a spicy tuna roll. The menu will tell you what goes into each different roll. Sashimi is just pieces of raw fish. It's suprisingly nice if you can get over the fact that your eating raw fish. I love fatty yellow tail sashimi. Nigiri is simply rice topped with some kind of fish. Some sushi rolls do have raw fish in them but its usually in small amounts.

last time I went to Kabuki was to the one in Pasadena. The chefs were really nice and they recommend stuff if you ask. You could ask what they recommend for someone who is eating sushi for the first time.

I'm really adventurous when it comes to food and I'll try anything once so I can't advise you fully on what will be best for you. I'm usually the person in the restaurant trying to convince people to eat the weirdest stuff on the menu, lol!

Theres a Kabuki on N.Vine in Hollywood and one in the Howard Hughes Center in LA.

i love sushi
i would say the California roll would be the best to start with
it doesn't have any fish.......my most favorite is eel......the taste is out of this world, eel is almost sweet....not fishy tasting.
tuna is pretty strong....salmon is good....shrimp is cooked....so if you like shrimp....that would be good...cucumber roll is great, no fish.........
you can get sushi with just one piece of fish, or you can get rolls, that have several items rolled into it........i would guess the rolls would be best for your second try.
good luck, it really is delicious.......i like the shrimp sauce with mine....but a lot of folks use soy sauce....which is just too salty for me
lindatn

sushi and sashimi are Delicious!!
don't be afraid of it, but make sure that you buy it from a place that is very busy (ie turns over ALOT of stock) so that you know it's going to be fresh. Also go for a place with a good reputation locally.

all of the rolls are nice, but go for what you like...if you don't like fish cooked, you are probably not going to like it raw...if you don't like avocado, avoid the sushi with avocado it etc

Be adventurous! Have a new experience! Live life to the fullest

Try as many different kinds as you can hold. Look, it's just food. The American aversion to raw food is simply not rational. Sushi is delicious and if it isn't to you, you will want to be able to say that you gave it a good try. (It will be delicious to you!!!)

"Maguro", which is tuna. Tastes a little like rare filet mignon...mmmmmm!

Since you don't like shrimp, you can always try this...

California roll
or a tuna roll

TUNA !!!!!!!!

California roll is the best intro to sushi. There is no raw fish in it. It's just crab stick (the same pink seafood stuff they use for seafood salad sandwiches), along with cucumber and avacado. You'll still get the unusual seaweed flavor and try a bit of wasabi with the soy sauce (carefully!)

As you begin to like the flavor of california rolls, you can get more adventurous with sushi containing raw fish. For your first raw fish venture, I'd recommend tuna. It's milder tasting and has a firmer texture.

Eat something with a vegetable for starters like cucumber, eggplant, avocado or california rolls. You can also tell the sushi chef( whoever prepares the sushi to remove fish roe= fish eggs- and other ingredients you dislike).

Every sushi restaurant will have a huge selections of sushi depending what type of ingredients you order. They prepare from the simplest to complex.
