Indian/south asian cakes and sweets - I want to try some - what do you suggest?!

Question: I am in england in an area with some indian/south asian stores and there are those sweets/cakes they sell. I want to try some but I am too shy just to walk into the shop and say, what do you suggest. Could you tell me the names of some that might be appealing for a 'beginner'. Thanks

These are typically called "burfi", they are sugary but very delicious. The best ones are the ones made from nuts like almond, cashew, pistachio.....

The best one is cashew or KAJU burfi (the roll is called Kaju katli).

Almond burfi is badam burfi.
Cashew burfi is kaju burfi.
Pistachio burfi is pista burfi.

The round balls are known as LADDU (or ladoo). They are also tasty. The best on is besan laddu (made from chickpea flour). Rava laddu is made from cream of wheat. There are also lots of laddu varieties.

Jalebi is a orange pretzel or free form shaped dessert, try it.
It's crispy, sweet and delicious.

Mysore Pak is another variety of "milk fudge".

Please dont be shy, I am sure the shopkeepers would love to help you. Just walk in and ask for cashew burfi. Tell him you heard Indian sweets were good but you are not very familiar.
Ask him for his recommendations. I am sure he will help you.
Ask him for a few samples too.

well my friend is indian and when i came over his house he offered me this tasty sweet known as ladoo a yellow ball with a few raisins in it, it wasnt bad but some other sweets he offered had alot of oil and grease to them but its your choice

You might see a lot of varieties of Indian sweets out there. Laddoo, gulab jamun, jalebi and mithais (pronounced as me-tha-ee) or sweet cakes as you call them. These sweet cakes come in many flavors. One of my favorite is called 'Kaju Kadli'. It is made of dairy products and cashew nuts. It is too good to resist. This one is not that greasy as it is not fried like many others. Another choice could be 'Sohan Papdi' which is made out of sugar and white flour. This is a good one too. If these are not available ask for any 'burfi' and pick out your favorite flavor.
Hope this helps.

well theres
burfi (the white one my favourite)
some green ones and chocolate ones
jaleebi
ladoo
i cant remember all the names but most of the times you can go into the shop and choose the ones u want by pointing at them or u can go with an asian freind.
usually i prefer the bright coloured ones.
good luck in finding mitai ( thats what all of them are called ) lolz
