Spicy Food?!

Question: Ok so I come from an indian family and basically they all like spicy food. For most of my life i usually get a seperate dish with no spices but everyone says that indian food is nothing without spicy. i really want to enjoy spicy food because sometimes i feel immature always asking for "plain" food. even if i have a little spice.. my tongue is like on fire and it hurts like crap. what should i do?

A lot of this depends on your age. If your young the spicy taste will grow with you. I was like this as well being of Hispanic Decent. We eat a lot of Chile!! I hated it when I was younger. But over the years I have become to be more and more of a fan. So just give it time.

Get used to it.
Ignore the heat, recognize the taste.

spicy food is not for everyone... I used to hate it but eventually it grew on me. Now I cant eat anything without some sort of kick. I asked for a 10 out of 10 at my local Thai restaurant and totally got my *** kicked but kept going back for more! So good!

Its not your fault. However if you really want to you can continually eat more chillies every time and eventually you will be immune to its heat like the rest of your family!

the heat will make your brain think that you are in pain and will kick in some endorphins that in turn will make you feel good. or just start with a little spice at a time and you will build a tolerance and eventually be able to enjoy spice food.

spicy does not always mean hot .
lots of indian dishes are so mild that even a non spicy person can enjoy them.

look up on the net for various northern dishes.

What you need to do is 'train your tongue' to the 'heat' of those spices ... take the 'mild' first (you already eat everything mild) then go up 1/2 to one 'level' of spiciness/heat and eat that for a couple of months until you can't 'feel the burn/pain' then go up again until you can stand the really HOT stuff. Try eating some of the Thai curries, since those are also spicy, but the 'levels of heat' are a bit less, and then you will eventually be able to eat the really HOT Indian food ... and there is NOTHING WRONG with eating the 'baby food' if you can't take the spicy stuff ... I usually order mild because I like to TASTE THE FOOD, and I can't do that when foods are too spicy, so all I can 'taste' is that HEAT. I'm 57, and I was raised on 'spicy food' too ... so it could be that you are just 'different' ... be PROUD of who you are, even if everyone else calls you a 'baby' and sooner or later, they'll quit calling you a baby.

Hi there.
U shouldn't feel bad for not being able to eat spicy foods. There's nothing wrong with you and it's just a matter of taste.
There are plenty of Indian dishes that are not spicy but still tasted wicked! Try the butter chicken or the vegetable dumplings in various sauces. Eating with friends and family should be a 'happy place' and people should respect for your gastronomic choices.
My cousin is pretty much like you and he can't even handle pepper.
I can't drink any kind of alcohol at all and I'm certainly not going to feel guilty about it. Be happy and enjoy food the way you like it.:)
You don't have a problem. Different strokes for different folks.

You have to just deal with it and get used to it...it takes some time but it is worth it....try starting slow with spicy foods building up over time.

The only way is by exposing yourself to it, little by little.

Start off with milder peppers (poblanos, jalapenos) and work your way up to serranos and cayennes. Lay off the habaneros!

eazy!!have a cup of water on the side..eat n drink.lol

don't like it, don't eat it. it doesn't matter what is your heritage. it is not a contest or against the law. it is not necessary "immature" just because u don't like spicy food.

your family is training you to be marriage material, arranged marriage material.

Spice is all about experience. Take a few months or a year and slowly build up your resistance. I like fiery hot and yet enjoy the delicate subtlety of food like sashimi. Being able to eat spicy food is considered 'macho' here in the states, but that's looney. It's just good food is all. Give your mouth a chance to enjoy it. Slowly. You'll get there.
