A tamale, is a traditional Native American food.

It would be a country where there are lots of banana trees because they use the banana leaf to cover it. Thats the authentic way. From that you can eliminate about half the countries in South America. But that still leaves quite a few. In different countries, they make it different so it also has many variations. Wish I could be of more help.

It is all about corn
where did that start ... Aztecs??
or more south
basic tamale - - cornmeal biscuit surrounding meat ,,steamed in a corn husk shell..
It is not until writting that ANY attention is given to the origin of who did this first
so north or central or south
BUT for sure America = corn..

it does sound spanish but my grandfather who is blackfoot says it native american

It originate from a country where corn and banana are plentifully. It was discovered by women.

Tamales are made of ground corn, and originated in the New World, meaning the continent of America, the birthplace of corn. Countries south of the United States all have their own variation of tamales.

Even in the Philippines, there is a similar-looking, similar-tasting TAMALES steamed in square banana leaf packets containing ground rice colored with anatto or achuete seeds and flavored with cooked meats and peanuts. Apparently another "imported" influence brought over from the Americas to the Philippines via the galleon trade that brought goods from Asia to Europe via the Manila-Acapulco route.
