Does Italy have a drinking problem?!

Question: I notice that alot of Italians on websites state they drink and because of the booze culture in the uk alot ofpeople maybe think that means they go out & get drunk.

My question, how much alcohol does the average Italian consume on a nightout?

I refuse to believe that Europe is full of drunks.

There must be countries in Europe where the average person doesn't drink to get drunk.

So if not Italy, does anybody know where that could be?

Italians (in Italy) go to a bar (Italian "pub") in order to drink, not to get drunk. I heard that stated by UK citizen, once, comparing the behavior of English and Italian people.
I think she's correct; in fact most problem are from foreign people living or visiting Italy; and actually when I heard about car accident caused by a drunk person, the drunk driver was very often a foreigner. Also, press report following Meredith Kercher murder unveiled the life of foreign students and it seems there is a problem with their attitude towards alcoholic drinks.
There are Italian people who get drunk, but in Italy like in all other Countries with a lower drinking age the problem is much lower compared to Countries with a higher legal drinking age.
Drinking is not seen as something "forbidden", so less people get drunk, it's cultural. But that apply to people who always lived in a Country with a low legal drinking age: now imagine a person coming from a Country where he/she can't drink and visit Italy or France where he/she can and actually do, but without the local "culture" about...
Also add Italians and French drink more wine (lower alcoholic level) and less strong drink.

In the US, people of Italian descent have a lower rate of alcoholism than a whole lot of other ethnicities.
(No, I am not going to name any of them.)

"Booze" consumption in Italy is low. Italians drink more wine than "booze." Alcohol consumption in Italy differs little from what it is in other European cultures.

they like to drink wine.

for lunch, they drink 1 bottle of wine all the time.

Most Italians drink wine with a meal, a glass maybe. In the clubs in Italy that I have been to Beer is served in a glass only and most people do not drink to get drunk. Wine is served to people of all ages as is the Italian culture as a family bond at the table..only in America do you sit down with a 6 pack on the living room floor and eat take away food..
