I heard FDA is conisdering take tuna off from sushi restaurants menu?!


Question: because of the high mercury level, while japanese government insists the level of mercury is low and not harmful.
why is the finding so different? who should we trust? are the fish come from different area so the mercury level is different? dose this mean even the tuna fish in the can also questionable?

tuna always contain mercury. it's an apex predator, on top of the food chain. plankton are eaten by fish, and fish accumulate mercury, these small fishes are eaten by still larger fish, and mercury gets concentrated (bioaccumulation). these large fish are then eaten by tuna and all that mercury ends up at the end of the line, in the tuna.


as for who to trust. remember fda swings both ways. they are supposed to protect teh consumer, in this case they are alerting us to mercury. however, the FDA is oftentimes reactionary and a scaremonger and dangers are often overblown. also the FDA is also strongly influenced by politics and whoever is in the whitehouse. if the whitehouse wants to stop imports of certain stuff, they will use the FDA to stymie it's import into the usa.

why? i love tuna and so does everyone else.

Farm raised tuna , if you can get it, has little or no mercury. If you eat sushi I would stick with a place which uses only farm-raised fish.

Oh yes, they tell you not to eat canned tuna more than once or twice a week and avoid it for young children.

The bigger fish have been in the water for longer and therefore absorb more mercury. That is why even in the great lakes you aren't allowed to fish salmon that are bigger than a certain size. They are not recommended for eating as they are too old and full of toxins...yuck.

You're probably better off eating farm produced fish.

I heard about this someplace else. I can't see how you could get mercury poisoning from fish unless you eat it frequently.

that would be a tragedy. I would have to find an underground sushi guy with black market tuna in that case.
