it is a new year based on lunar caleder. we use solar caleder
AKA gregorian calender

It's New Years in France.

New yrs for the Chinese!

The traditional Chinese calendar is lunar not the same as the Julean/Augustan calendar we follow which is solar based. They celebrate their new year on a different date than December 31. Similarly, the Jewish calendar is on a lunar cycle so Jewish New Year is celebrated in the fall.

And I believe it is the year of the rat. Every year is based on an animal. Google Chinese new year and read about it. It is interesting.
