What authentic Mexican foods are typically made with lard?!


Question: Although pig lard is used extensively, many people have switched to vegetable oils because of the calories and the cholesterol involved. Lard does give refried beans and almost anything an absolutely delicious flavor that neither oil or vegetable lard is able to duplicate. Flour tortillas, empanadas, oven baked leg of pork or turkey, eggs, salsas, and all the different snacks made out of corn dough, called antojitos, are fried in pig lard.
I prefer to use oil instead.

Refried Beans

I don't know for sure, but I'd say anything fried. And I'm pretty sure tamales would have some.

Tortillas are traditionally made with lard.

Also, if it is deep fried, it it is done so in lard.

I am not Mexican
I live in very northern California.
Now as I think and consider life in authentic Mexico...
and that I use lard often...
It does not need refrigeration so I imagine it is used every day and 3 -4 times a day.
I know it is the BEST to use for pie dough it stays cold longer.

Lard is the traditional fat in most of Mexico. You'll find it in everything from breads and Bizcochitos to tamales and enchiladas.
