Roti same as wheat tortilla?!

Question: Roti is a type of Indian flatbread. A roti is made most often from wheat flour, cooked on a flat or slightly concave iron griddle called a tawa. Like breads around the world, roti is a staple accompaniment to other foods, maybe spread with ghee (clarified butter) or yoghurt, used as a scoop, or rolled up with a filling; e.g. egg, onions, banana etc.

ROTI (makes 8)

4 cups of whole wheat flour
1 and 1/4 cups of water
Butter

Keep aside a little flour for dusting. In a large mixing bowl, gradually add the water to the flour and mix well until you have stiff dough. The easiest way to do this is by using clean hands. Knead the dough until it yields a smooth texture and consistency. Cover with a slightly damp cloth and let the dough rest for 10-15 minutes.

Knead the dough again and divide into 8 equal portions. Roll the individual portions into round balls (golf ball size). Take 1 round ball at a time and flatten it into a round disk using your palms. Dust your work area and rolling pin with a little bit of flour to prevent sticking. Gently roll the flattened ball into a circle, making sure the roti is even in thickness. Keep rolling until you have created a thin round roti approximately 8 inches in diameter.

Heat a large frying pan on medium heat, add a little butter (or even cooking spray may be used) and carefully place the roti in the pan. After a minute or so, turn the roti. Both sides should be golden brown. Brush with butter and serve hot with traditional Indian vegetables or curries. Enjoy!

A tortilla is a kind of thin, unleavened flat bread, made from finely ground maize (corn) or wheat flour. The wheat flour tortilla was an innovation after wheat was brought to the New World from Spain while this region was the colony of New Spain. It is made with an unleavened, water based dough, pressed and cooked like corn tortillas.

No Roti is in the same family of grains, but is not wheat

Roti is similar to a wheat tortilla, but there are differences.

Roti is made with a special hard-wheat flour which is called 'atta' in Hindi. Flour tortillas are usually made with all-purpose flour, but can be made with whole-wheat flour.

Also, tortillas usually have some type of shortening or oil in them, whereas roti usually just have 'atta', salt, and water. Rotis can be made with a little oil, but then they are usually called parathas.

Other than that, they are similar flat-breads, and you could use flour tortillas as a passable substitute for rotis!

NO NO NO - ROTI is very very different to a tortilla....just go try one at a good indian restuarant.....and you will know.......obv. home made is even better - there is no comparision....

I guess if all else fails you could use that - but if someone really knows how to make it there should be a vast difference between the two.

nope..
but u can describe it like that..

Tortillas are usually made from either all-purpose flour or whole wheat flour and have shortening such as crisco or lard (manteca). Rotis are made from a type of wheat flour usally sold in Indian grocery stores. They can be made either with or without ghee/oil. They are significantly different in taste.

Try Curry Leaf Indian Restaurant on Grand River in Farm. Hls. I think they sell 10 roti for around $3.
