What is the gizzard of a bird?!
Answers: What is it? I know it's one of those parts that goes over the fence, but what does it do and where is it naturally in the turkey's body.
giz·zard
NOUN:
A modified muscular pouch behind the stomach in the alimentary canal of birds, having a thick lining and often containing ingested grit that aids in the breakdown of seeds before digestion.
What about the fence??
It is a grinder and reduces grain to mush
much like our teeth..
part of bird's digestive tract: a thick-walled muscular sac in the alimentary tract of birds where food is broken down by muscular action and by small stones ingested for that purpose
That is where the poo is stored.
The gizzard, also referred to as the ventriculus, gastric mill, and gigerium, is an organ in the digestive tract found in birds, reptiles, earthworms, some fish, and other creatures. This specialized stomach constructed of thick, muscular walls is used for grinding up food. In certain insects and molluscs, the gizzard features chitinous plates or teeth. It was my Father's
favorite part, I have never tryed it.
Poultry gizzards are the "teeth" -usually a two-lobed organ located behind the stomach where food is ground down for digestion. When I was a poor college student, a pound of chicken gizzards purchased for under a dollar was the basis of many gourmet dinners.
All birds eat dirt or grit that goes and stays in one part of their body that helps them to digest seeds or whatever they eat. I would imagine it is somewhere in their digestive tract area...
