What is a nice curry powder or paste?!
I want to try and make my own curry.
Answers: what brand??
I want to try and make my own curry.
powder is simply raw prepared spice but paste the spices have been cooked out so it is not gritty to eat if using powder you would have to cook out the spices to prevent the raw taste of spices and them being gritty remember too that tasting curry before it has a chance of cooking out will give you a false taste coz as it cooks out it will get hotter a lesson i learned some years ago as i thought it would not be hot enough so i kept adding more chilly and more curry paste and boy was it hot
dont bother fussin about spenin a fortune hoping you and others will taste the difference, just spend 89p at tesco and watch a bit extra telly.
you fus person you. chil chil
Knorr tikka masala or pataks vindaloo with tamarind and chilli for a firey one!
If it is a Chinese curry powder you are looking for, I can highly recommend the one made by 'Mayflower' that comes in a box. I have only ever seen it though in Morrisons or Farmfoods. It is 99p a box and will make many curries but DO follow the instructions carefully by mixing with COLD water not warm otherwise it will go lumpy. To add some extra flavour, put in a drop of soy sauce, half a teaspoon of honey, some black pepper, ground Coriander and ground Cinnamon. This is as good as what you get from a Chinese take away.
Pataks are popular. I somethimes use them but add additional fresh ginger, cardamon and other spices. Can add extra chilli to heat it up if you want. You can also add cream/yogurt and creamed coconut for different flavours. Use the paste as a base and experiment.
pataks mild curry paste, and really easy to use. I use it with chickpeas (cut up onion and garlic, fry gently til translucent, add 3 tbsp of paste, diced tomatoes, can of chickpeas, simmer about 10 mins, add a little plain yogurt and eat with rice. Yum.
You can make your own paste, - but I am guessing that at this stage, - you simply want to make a curry, - so...
For a mild curry - Pataks or Supermarket own brand Korma;
For a slighty hotter one - Pataks/Supermarket own - Dopiaza (double onion), Balti, Rogan Josh (nice with Lamb) or Tikka
For a spicy curry - Pataks/Supermarket own - Madras or Vindaloo.
Hope this helps=]
Either:
Curry paste: Pataks
Curry powder: Schwartz (powder needs to be fried first or it will taste gritty/powdery when the curry is cooked),.
You will need to fry onions and garlic first, then add the paste or powder and add chopped fresh coriander at the end of cooking.
i use minaras rogan josh paste 1 tin of chopped tomatoes and 1 lb diced lamb all together in a pot in the oven on gas mark 6 for 1 and 3/4 hours and honestly its delicious and so easy to make
I use Pataks madras curry sauce in a jar. You fry some onions and meat then coat them in a couple of spoon fulls of the curry sauce. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes and in an hour you have a very good curry. My favourite is beef.
Congratulations first off for having a go.Your tops and I'm all in favour of making your own food.. Nice one and you get my star.
Before I started to make my own curry powder ( which is dead easy when you get to know the spices you like). I always bought Sharwoods medium hot - but there are so many out there now it has to be your choice.
I really hope you enjoy making it and it might not be too long before your making another.
Good Luck........xxxxxxxxxxxx
Thai curry- Mae ploy you have red, green, yellow and massaman
Japanese- S&B golden curry mild, hot, extra hot
If your caucasian you might want to try the japanese one first. For some reason most of my acquatnace like the japanese one better. They weren't into the fish sauce in the thai curry.
I use a chinese curry mix made by Yeungs. It's really tasty and because it's powder based you can make as much or as little as you like. You can get it in butchers and bizzarely fish shops!!
