The meaning behind is that some hindu scriptures mention that killing other living beings is cruel. It is considered a sin. There are some people who do not kill plants as well. They do not eat the roots (or underground stems) as the plant can die.

Not all Indians are vegetarians. We do eat chicken, seafood and lamb/mutton. Beef and Pork are very rarely consumed by Indians. Beef is a strict no-no for most Hindus as the cow is considered to be a holy animal.

I'm not Indian, but chat with many Indian ppl and am familiar with the culture. Some eat meat...mostly goat, also poultry, like chicken and seafoods. Most won't eat beef or pork tho...and are healthier as a result

Being vegetarians keeps the body and mind pure. Many Hindus prefer to be vegetarian, others will eat mainly chicken and fish. The majority or Hindus do not eat beef or pork. Lamb is eaten in the north.

It's a complex topic, here's a good article:

im not indian but i can answer this one...yes they it meat such like lamb, chicken, but not beef or pork

I don't. My family don't because they're hindu and sikhs and it's their religion. I personally do not because I don't agree with animal cruelty.

Interesting fact: in India, food is referred to as NON VEGETARIAN if it has meat, and vegetarian is considered normal!

Put simply: Indian food is so full of interesting flavours and is so fulfilling, that meat is simply not missed. When a Western dish comprises of boiled vegetables and a fried lump of meat, of course you'd miss it.
