The Taste of a Nation?!

Question: I am curious to know the cause of the American obsession with Ranch Dressing. When Americans visit another country do they bring some along like Japanese with instant miso and Aussies with their Vegemite? I find the flavour of Ranch Dressing to be cheap and lightly metallic and prefer to make my own dressings with assorted oils, vinagers or citrus juices. Am I just another food snob on a high horse? Do tell!

You're a food snob on a high horse.

ranch is a dredful copout that simply pushes the right buttons in the primitive parts of the brain. middle america has embraced this rubbish as though it has actual value! if i knew where the hidden valley ranch was i would burn it to the ground and sow the land with salt! ooo! i am too late, someone beat me to it!

No you are not a food snob - each to their own as far as taste buds go.
My husband likes the old New Zealand favourite made with sweetened Condensed Milk, Mustard Powder, Malt Vinegar, where as I like the standard oil & Balsamic vinegar.

But, in saying all of that, we certainly don't take our favourite dressing or any food stuffs with us if visiting another country as we like to sample what that particular country has to offer.

Just because you like your own dressing made with things you like doesn't make you a food snob.
I don't like commercial dressings either they usually have too much salt for my taste.
And this is one Aussie who loathes Vegemite - again too salty

I don't know that travelers bring Ranch Dressing with them...but I do sense that it's a product that has enjoyed incredible success in this country for two reasons: FAT content, which makes it very acceptable to the palette, and commercialization: it's avaiable everywhere. As a product itself, it's nothing more than mayo and garlic and buttermilk--that sort of thing, But as a real taste? As an actual flavor? It's nothing more than an emulsion, a tainted sort of slather that helps the food go down. Bless you!

you're not a snob! i agree its gross. but everyone has their own taste, and that just happens to be what americans like....
its just a matter of opinion and looks like the majority of americans are likin it.

Oi!
Ranch dressing is great.
Good with bloomin onions, fried fish, tonkatsu, weinerschnitzel, sardine fritters, eggplant parmagian....all things fried!
