What types of sushi are moral to eat?!?!?!

Question: Okay - this question may sound absurd for a carnivore like myself. What I really care about is, what kinds of fish (or eel, or shrimp, or whatever) that go into sushi are being rapidly depleted from the oceans? Are there types of sushi that are from fish whose stocks are sustainable? I'm in no mood for tofu sushi, btw, but I'm steering clear of Humpback whale sushi. ;).

You might want to steer clear of the shrimp since it is probably farm raised and this has caused catastrophic environmental damage, especially in Thailand.

They cut the mangroves down to make the farms and it uses huge amount of fresh water that was used for farming. They also feed the shrimp "by-catch" which is junk fish that can't be sold to the US but is normally sold to local people.

So in countries where they raise shrimp, the local folks have less protein to eat and cutting down the mangroves takes away habitat for juvenille fish. The mangroves also remove silt from the water and without them, the silt kills coral reefs. Farm-raised shrimp is bad stuff.....

Farm-raised eel are probably on the other end of the spectrum but they are too icky and oily for for me.

Blue-fin tuna is also coraled in mile-wide nets for about a week, where it is fed junk fish to fatten up before it is harvested.

In general, eating predator fish has more of an impact than eating prey fish. Urchins are still pretty much unlimited.

Stay with the catfish sushi, it's pond raised and sustainable.

tuna, the bluefin type is in most danger of being overfished, because it is the most sought after fish for sushi...getting very, very expensive also.. With the current upswing of sushi bars and people eating more of it i'm not sure how many more ocean fishes are in danger of extinction, but the tuna is the one that is currently being over fished..

All this talk of Toro and Uni are making me hungry!!!

One Blue fin tuna can be worth $20,000 in Japan

I believe the large size tuna is now around 4 or 500 lbs.
Years ago it was 7 or 800 lbs
Good thing they are farming them now!

I just read again, the above post. I think it's more like a month, not a week.

I love Toro = tuna belly, uni, yelow tail and onkimo!
Oysters on the half shell, fresh salmon!!

25 year sushi eater.

Stay away from: Whale, wild salmon, toro (tuna), magoro (tuna belly). Catfish is raised in fresh water, so be careful. Freshwater fish, when eaten raw, could have living parasites in their flesh.

Stick to cucumber, mango (California Roll), Kani (crabsticks), prawns, Tamago (egg).
