slight diversion, cayenne peper mixed in equal parts with glycerine makes a great warming lotion for arthritis

The biggest difference is the actually CHILI pepper(s) used to make them.

The CAYENNE pepper is obviously used to make ground cayenne pepper. This is a mild chili and very popular in the US.

RED CHILI POWDER (for the example used in Indian cooking) contains local Indian chili peppers that are dried and finely ground into a powder. There is no cayenne peppers in this! RCP is made in a variety of spice/heat levels from mild to "gunpowder".

no way

No Cayenne pepper is more smoky

According to Madhur Jaffrey, queen of Indian cooking, cayenne pepper and chilli powder are the same. I have both in my kitchen. The cayenne pepper is probably lighter in colour than the chilli powder that I have, but they're both quite hot. I got the cayenne pepper from Sainsbury's (foolish me...) and the chilli powder from an Asian grocer. I think you can at least use them the same in cooking.

But they are different to paprika, which is sweeter and far less hot. I use paprika in a korma for the taste without the heat.
